Out To Swim Channel Relay Swim 2023

Calling all intrepid Out To Swimmers interested in taking part in a Channel Relay Swim in summer 2023. This is a fantastic opportunity to take part in a once in a lifetime experience, something you will remember forever and form new friends through an amazing team bonding process.

Sounds good? Keep reading for details:

What is a Channel Relay Swim?
You will be part of a team of six and will be accompanied all the way by an experienced Channel Pilot crew and boat. Starting near the beach in Dover the first swimmer enters the water, swims back to the beach, stands then jumps back in the water and starts to swim following the lead of the boat at all times. After an hour the second swimmer enters the water and swims from behind, past the first swimmer who then exits and rests on the boat. You continue rotating your team in this way until you reach France - each swimmer in the water for an hour at a time.

What is the Date?
17th-21st July 2023. This will be your 'swimming window' so you would have to guarantee that time period off allowing flexibility for the weather to do you swim. It is advised to allow even a couple of weeks 'free' after that window just in case.

How much will it cost?
The full cost of the boat and pilot is £3200 divided by 6 - £533. On top of this you can expect to pay for trips to Dover Harbour or a local sea spot to train and additional visits to Lidos etc. In total it could be roughly £800. The first installment would be due in November. Please remember the OTS scholarship fund if you are keen to participate but might struggle with costs.

How will we organise who swims?
The aim is to have as wide a representation of OTS as possible. We would like to encourage swimmers from all genders and locations - London, Brighton, and Bristol. The final team will be chosen by random ballot giving preference to having at least 1 person from each branch and a mix of genders.

What time commitment should I expect to give?
The main commitment to a Channel Swim is getting used to cold water. The sea in July could be around 14 degrees. You would need to take time to acclimatise to cold water swimming by training in local lidos, lakes and the sea. It would be required to do several trips to Dover Harbour (or a local sea spot) for sea training and you must complete an official 2 hour non stop swim before being allowed to take part in a channel relay.

This is a short summary of what to expect but if you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact The Open Water Crew at openwater@outtoswim.org

Applications will need to be made by 18th September so have a think and hope to hear from you soon.
